Naturopathic Medicine

What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a comprehensive approach to health care that focuses on finding and treating the underlying case of your health concerns, as opposed to treating only the symptoms. Naturopathic doctors are trained to diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions, just like your regular general practitioner.

How are naturopathic doctors trained?

Application to an accredited Doctor of Naturopathy degree program requires a university bachelor’s degree, prerequisite courses, essay, and interview. Once accepted into the post-graduate program, the naturopathic medical curriculum is an intensive four-year, full-time program that includes the study of medical and clinical sciences (anatomy, physiology, pharmacology), diagnostics (differential diagnosis and laboratory diagnosis), and naturopathic principles and therapeutics (botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, homeopathy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, counselling, and manipulation). A one-year clinic internship provides 1500 hours of direct patient contact under the guidance of licensed Naturopathic doctors. On completion of this four-year program, naturopathic medical students must write and pass two sets of rigorous North American standardized board examinations and provincial licensing examinations before they may legally use the title Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine or “N.D.” Licensed doctors in Ontario are required to take continuing education courses to remain in good standing with the regulatory body.

How are Naturopathic Doctors regulated?

Naturopathic Doctors in Ontario are regulated under the Regulated Health Professions Act, similar to other health care professions such as physicians, chiropractors, pharmacists, and dentists. The College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO) ensures high-quality primary health care.

What about my prescription medications?

Licensed naturopathic doctors are trained in pharmacology and have knowledge of drug-nutrient/herb interactions. You may be taking important prescription medications that cannot be stopped, but naturopathic doctors can help you manage any side effects that you experience. Please consult with Suzanne before adjusting any prescription medications.
